Initially, he represented Brazilian club Gremio later he played for the major part of his career in European clubs including Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, and Milan. Later, he returned to his Brazilian clubs playing from Flamengo and Atletico Mineiro. Then he moved to Queretaro, a famous Mexican football club.

               His main playing position is as an attacking midfielder or forward. He displayed a vital role in winning his team 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea and Japan along with his other teammates like Ronaldo and Rivaldo popularly known as “Three Rs”. He was also included in the FIFA World Cup All-Star Team.
